Ports of Entry
While most of us immediately think of Ellis Island in New York when we first think of ports of entry into the United States, immigrants entered through dozens of US and Canadian ports. The most popular US ports of entry were New York, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. Other popular ports of entry include several cities in Atlantic and Gulfport states (such as New Bedford, Massachusetts; Key West, Florida; and Gulfport and Pascagoula, Mississippi), as well as a few Pacific ports such as Honolulu and San Francisco. In fact, the West Coast had its own immigration processing station, Angel Island, which was nicknamed the “Ellis Island of the West.” Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay area operated from 1910 to 1940 and processed hundreds of thousands of immigrants from eighty-four different countries, but primarily China, Japan, and Russia. Castle Garden, the precursor to Ellis Island in New York, processed immigrants from 1855 to 1890. Ellis Island processed immigrants from 1892 to 1954.
Some ancestors may have arrived in Canada first and then made their way to the United States. If that was the case with your ancestor, you may need to look for him or her in US–Canadian border crossing records or in passenger lists at Canadian ports of entry.
